A short video showing the main features of the Volt914, and giving a good sense of what it sounds like to drive around in it:

Here's what your next project should be:

Moreover, it turns out the guy who runs the site (otherpower.com) lives just outside of Ft. Collins! Strange, small world...

That's pretty cool, Dave. I'll have to go check it out.

I've already identified the next project; see http://www.driveev.com/jeepev/home.php

And the one after it; see http://www.jstraubel.com/EVpusher/EVpusher2.htm

I won't lack for hobbies for at least a couple of years...

While the engineering utility of such a contraption is fairly easy to grasp, I can't help thinking how ugly the pusher trailer is. However, I chuckled seeing how nice and shiny the electric Jeep was compared to its gasoline-powered former self!

Ross, this is a great blog - I am hoping to start a project this year with a friend and the detail you've recorded is incredible. Great stuff. Simon, Italy

Nice car! I found you on the the German Car Blog today. Say, you don't happen to still have that nasty old Type IV motor laying around do you? I'd love to put it into my Beetle. :-)

honestly - why can't I have one of these? do I really need to do all that engineering? is there a way to just buy the finished product? is there a more modern chassis that could be used for this?

is it just not economical to have a market for evs?

Simon, thanks. You should all check out TimK's blog at http://914ev.blogspot.com for another implementation. Gumby_mac, sadly for you (but happily for me :-) I already sold the original 1.8 weber-converted gas engine to someone local in Colorado. And, Roz, yes, I agree - see the movie "Who killed the electric car?" I researched various (non-) options for buying an all-electric vehicle before deciding to execute the conversion. I think there is a large untapped market for OEM electric-only vehicles but, for whatever reason, the OEMs are not generally targeting it at this time. Hopefully, with new battery technology, this will change over the next year or two.

Hi Ross,

Just came across a story about you in the Coloradoan, and wanted to let you know I blogged about your 914 and posted a link back to this blog on my Porsche blog called Pcar Blog.

Very cool 914!
